How the Word Descrambler Works
The descrambler checks every word in CSW24 (Collins Scrabble Words 2024) — the word list used for competitive Scrabble across most of the world outside North America, containing about 280,000 valid English words — and finds every word that can be formed from your letters.
For each word in the dictionary, the tool checks whether your input letters contain all the letters that word needs, counting duplicates correctly. Results are grouped by word length, longest first. Click any word to open its definition in Merriam-Webster.
Tips & Tricks
- Blank tiles: Use ? or * for each blank tile in games like Scrabble or Words With Friends. The solver will find every word reachable by substituting that blank with any letter.
- Starts / Ends With: Use these filters when you know a letter placement on the board. For example, if there's already an S at a position, set "Ends With" to S to find words that fit.
- Must Include: If you want to use a specific high-value tile (like Q or Z), enter it here to only see words that require it.
- Word Length: In Scrabble, a 7-letter word uses all your tiles (a "bingo") and scores a 50-point bonus. Filter to length 7 to see your bingo opportunities.
- Common 2-letter words: Knowing valid 2-letter words (aa, ab, ae, ai, al, am, an, ar, as, at, aw, ax, ay…) is essential for parallel plays in Scrabble.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use blank tiles?
Use ? or * for each blank tile. The solver will find every word reachable by substituting that blank with any letter — for example, entering FRIEN? finds FRIEND among other results. You can use multiple blanks in the same query.
What word list does the descrambler use?
The descrambler uses CSW24 (Collins Scrabble Words 2024) — the word list used for competitive Scrabble across most of the world outside North America, containing about 280,000 valid English words. It is more permissive than the North American NWL list, so a few results may not be valid in a NWL tournament. For puzzles requiring all letters to be used exactly once, the anagram solver is the more precise tool.
What is a Scrabble bingo?
A bingo is when you play all 7 tiles from your rack in a single turn, scoring a 50-point bonus on top of the word's face value. Set the Word Length filter to exactly 7 to find all possible bingos from your current rack. For 5-letter word games like Wordle, the Wordle solver uses color-coded feedback to narrow guesses.
How do I find words that fit a specific board position?
Use the Starts With or Ends With filters. If there is already an S on the board, set Ends With to S to find all words ending in S from your tiles. The Must Include filter ensures a specific high-value tile (like Q or Z) appears in every result.
Worked example
Rack: A E I O R S T. The 7-letter bingo OTARIES scores 50 bonus points. Setting Min Length = 6 shows ORATES, SATIRE, AIREST, STRIAE and others. Setting Must Include = R and Min Length = 5 narrows the list to R-containing words only. Blank tile: enter AEIO?ST to find words using any letter in place of the blank — results include 7-letter bingos like SEAPORT (? = P).
