1. Who we are

yootils is a free online calculator and conversion tool website. We are not a data business — we simply provide useful tools.

In the language of UK data protection law, the data controller — the party responsible for the small amount of personal data described below — is yootils, an independent, family-run site operated by Russ Rogers in Warwickshire, United Kingdom. Any question about this policy, or any request under section 6, should go to info@yootils.com.

2. What data we collect

We collect minimal data. Specifically:

Server logs. Like every website, yootils is delivered by a web server, and that server writes a log entry for each file it sends. An entry records your IP address, what was requested, the date and time, the response, and the browser's user-agent string. This is automatic, it is how the web works, and it is needed to serve the site and diagnose faults. An IP address is personal data under UK law, so we state it plainly rather than claim we hold nothing at all. We do not use these logs to build a profile of you, we do not link them to anything else, and we do not share them.
No account data. You are never asked to sign up or log in.
No form data is sent to our servers. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. Numbers you enter into calculators are never transmitted to us. The contact form is no exception: it has no submission address of its own, and the button hands your message to your own email app to send, so it reaches us as ordinary email and passes through no form-handling service on the way.
No cookies. We do not set any browser cookies. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.
Browser local storage. We use your browser's local storage (not cookies) to save small pieces of data on your device. This data never leaves your device. Specifically, we store:
- yootil_cookie_consent — your Accept or Decline response to our consent banner, so we do not show it on every visit.
- yootil_events — anonymous counts of tool interactions (e.g. how many times a calculator was used) used for aggregate usage analytics. No personal information is included. This data stays on your device unless you have accepted analytics and an analytics endpoint is configured.
If you choose No thanks on the banner, the usage counts are not written and any already stored are deleted. Only your answer itself is kept, so we do not ask again on every page.
Aggregate analytics. We may collect anonymised, aggregate data about which tools are used most often to help us improve the site. This data does not identify you personally and is not linked to any persistent identifier.

3. How we use your data, and our legal basis for it

Server logs are used for two things only: keeping the site running, and working out what went wrong when something breaks. We do not mine them for insight about visitors.

Any aggregate analytics data is used solely to improve the website — for example, to prioritise which new tools to build. We do not sell, rent, or share any data with third parties for marketing purposes.

The law requires a specific legal basis for each of those, rather than a general good intention. Ours are:

Server logs — legitimate interests. We have a genuine interest in keeping the site available, secure, and working correctly, and we cannot do that without the log a web server writes by default. The processing goes no further than that: the entries are not used to identify anyone, not combined with anything else, and not shared. Weighing that against your privacy, we judge it does not override your rights — and if you disagree, you can object, under section 6.
Usage counts — your consent. Nothing is counted unless you choose Accept on the banner, and choosing No thanks means nothing is written. You can withdraw at any time by clearing your browser storage, which takes effect immediately and needs nothing from us.
Remembering your banner answer — strictly necessary. Your Accept or Decline response is the one thing stored without asking first, because the only alternative is to ask again on every page you open. Nothing else is kept alongside it.

4. How long we keep it

Server logs. We do not download them, export them, or keep copies of our own. They exist only on the hosting provider's servers and are erased on that provider's ordinary log-rotation schedule, which we do not extend and have no reason to. Nothing from them is archived, and no record built from them outlives them.

Anything in your browser. For exactly as long as you leave it there. We never receive it, so we cannot delete it for you and we cannot keep it after you have gone. Clearing your browsing data removes it immediately and permanently.

5. Third-party services

All fonts, word lists, and other assets are self-hosted. We do not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. Opening a page on this site makes no request to any other company.

One third party is unavoidable: the site is hosted by Hostinger, whose servers deliver every page and write the access logs described in section 2. They hold those logs on our behalf and may not use them for their own purposes.

6. Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask what personal data we hold about you, ask for a copy of it, ask us to correct or erase it, and object to how it is used. Those rights apply to the server log entries described in section 2, which are the only personal data we hold.

They do not reach anything stored in your browser, for the simple reason that we never receive it. Local storage sits on your device, and you can clear it yourself at any time in your browser settings — doing so removes your consent choice and any usage counts, and nothing has to be asked of us.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at the address in section 9. One practical limitation is worth stating: a request about log data needs the IP address you were using and the rough date and time of the visit, because that is the only thing the entries can be searched by. We hold nothing else that could identify which entries are yours. We will respond within one month, which is the period the law allows.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data or your request, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's independent data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113. You do not have to raise it with us first, though we would rather you did, so we have the chance to put it right.

7. Children

yootils is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
