A calorie calculator, and one shared model behind it

Calorie Calculator — how many calories a day you need to maintain your weight, and what to eat instead to lose or gain. Shows the resting figure, what activity adds, and the working.

BMR Calculator — now shares one model with the calorie calculator rather than carrying its own copy of the equations, so the two pages cannot drift apart. The figures it shows are unchanged.

Terms and Conditions — strengthened in your favour. We now say plainly that we never exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud, because no term could lawfully do that and you should not have to find out the hard way. Your statutory rights as a consumer are untouched, and if you are a consumer you can bring a claim in the courts where you live rather than ours. There is also a new acceptable-use section and a severability clause. And the last updated date is now taken from the page's own change history instead of typed, because it had been reading 1 January while the widget licence underneath it was three days old.

Improved
Contact form — now hands your message to your own email app instead of posting it to a form service. Press the button and your mail app opens with everything filled in, addressed to us, for you to send. It means your name, address and message never pass through a third party, we hold no copy you did not send us, and you keep one in your sent items. It costs one extra click, which we think is a fair trade.

Privacy Policy — now states the things UK law requires and the page had never said: who the data controller is and how to reach them, the legal basis for each thing we do (legitimate interests for server logs, your consent for usage counts), how long anything is kept, and your right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office if we get it wrong. None of this changes what the site does. It means you can now check what we are allowed to do, not just take our word for what we do.

Privacy Policy — corrected. It said that because we hold no personal data about you, there was nothing to access, correct or delete. That was wrong: our web server writes an access log for every request, and those entries contain IP addresses, which are personal data under UK law. Nothing about the site itself has changed — we still set no cookies, and we still never receive what you type into a calculator — but the page now states what the server records, why, and what you can ask us for. Your rights apply to those log entries.

BMR Calculator — the worked example printed the wrong total. For a 30 year old man of 75 kg and 178 cm it added up the Mifflin-St Jeor terms correctly and then stated the answer as 1,807 kcal a day, and a maintenance figure of 2,801. The correct figures are 1,718 and 2,662. If you noted either number down, it was about 90 kcal a day too high at rest and about 140 too high for maintenance. The calculator itself was always right; only the example beside it was wrong.

VAT Calculator — add VAT to a price or take it back out, at the UK rates of 20%, 5% and 0%. Shows the net, the VAT and the gross together, and explains why removing VAT is a division rather than subtracting 20%.

Pregnancy Countdown — the worked example gave two milestone dates that did not match the tracker above it. For a last period of 1 October 2025 it said the anatomy scan window fell on 18 February 2026 and the third trimester began on 25 March 2026. The correct dates are 4 February 2026 for week 18 and 15 April 2026 for week 28 — the third trimester date was three weeks early. The tracker itself was always right; only the example was wrong.

Due Date Calculator — work out a pregnancy due date from your last period, a dating scan, a conception date or an IVF transfer. Shows the 37 to 42 week term window beside the date, because very few babies arrive on the day itself.

Retirement Calculator — project your pension pot to retirement including what your employer pays in and the State Pension on top, shown in today’s money. It also asks whether your contributions are on full salary or on qualifying earnings, because the statutory minimum uses the narrower band and the two answers differ by tens of thousands over a working life.

A correction to the BMR calculator worked example

BMR Calculator — the worked example stated 1,807 kcal BMR and 2,801 kcal TDEE for a 30-year-old man at 75 kg and 178 cm. The correct figures, which the calculator itself has always shown, are 1,718 kcal and 2,662 kcal. If you used that example to set a calorie target rather than the calculator above it, the figure was about 140 kcal a day too high.

42 of our 60 calculators — are now checked automatically against worked examples calculated from the published formulas — 114 checks in all, including the inputs that break calculators, like a zero interest rate, a reversed date range or a blank field. They run before any change can be committed, and the page above says which tools are covered and which are not yet.

Compound Interest — the Compound Frequency setting was ignored and every projection compounded monthly, so Annually, Semi-annually and Quarterly all came out too high — £10,000 at 7% over 10 years compounded annually was shown as £20,096.61 when it should have been £19,671.51. All five frequencies now work, and the effective annual rate follows the one you pick. A projection you ran before today is worth checking again.

A calculator is only as good as the rules behind it. Each one now says which rules it used, where they came from, and when we last looked.

If a calculator gives a result you cannot reproduce, cites a rule that has since changed, or breaks on your device, tell us through the contact page and include the address of the page. Corrections to a calculation are logged above, not applied quietly.
