Anagram Solver vs. Word Descrambler
A word descrambler finds every word that can be made from any subset of your letters — including short 2-letter words using just 2 of your 10 letters. Useful for Scrabble rack management.
An anagram solver is stricter: it only shows words or phrases that use every single letter exactly once. "LISTEN" → "SILENT", "ENLIST", "TINSEL", "INLETS" — each uses all six letters. This is the tool for solving newspaper Jumble puzzles, cryptic crossword anagram clues, and finding the hidden word in a scrambled phrase.
Common Use Cases
- Jumble & newspaper puzzles: Daily word puzzles scramble a word and ask you to find the original. Enter the scrambled letters here for the instant answer.
- Cryptic crosswords: Cryptic clues often hide an anagram indicator word ("mixed", "rearranged", "confused"). Spot the indicator, feed the remaining letters to this solver.
- Word games: In Wordscapes, Wordament, and similar games, you're given a set of letters and must find all words — exact anagrams of the full set included. The Wordle solver applies this approach to 5-letter word games.
- Name anagrams: Famous anagrams include "ASTRONOMER" → "MOON STARER", "DORMITORY" → "DIRTY ROOM". Enter a name to see what hidden words lurk inside.
- Blank tile strategy: Use ? to represent an unknown or blank tile and see every word reachable with each possible substitution.
How Two-Word Anagrams Work
For inputs of 4–14 letters, the solver also searches for every pair of dictionary words whose letters, combined, equal your exact input. For example, "ASTRONOMER" (10 letters) yields the two-word anagram "MOON STARER". The solver checks all valid splits of your letters across two words and reports matching pairs.
Two-word results are capped at 300 pairs for performance. Longer inputs with common letter combinations may have many more; use the single-word filters to narrow your search first.
Worked Example
Enter SILENT (6 letters): single-word anagrams found — ENLIST, INLETS, LISTEN, TINSEL (4 results). Enable two-word mode for additional pairs. Enter ASTRONOMER (10 letters): one of the famous two-word anagram pairs is MOON STARER. Use the length filter set to 6 to confirm all SILENT anagrams are exactly 6 letters with no letters left over.
Privacy & Data
All solving happens in your browser. Your letters are never sent to a server. The CSW24 word list (Collins Scrabble Words 2024, about 280,000 words) is downloaded once from this site and cached by your browser.
What makes a valid anagram
A true anagram uses every letter of the original word or phrase exactly once. "Astronomer" and "Moon starer" are a famous example. Spaces and punctuation are ignored. The solver checks all permutations against a dictionary, which is why it returns results instantly rather than generating every possible arrangement letter-by-letter.
Famous anagrams
"The Morse Code" is an anagram of "Here Come Dots". "Eleven plus two" rearranges to "Twelve plus one". These are not coincidences found by hand — anagram software discovered them by searching a dictionary for words whose sorted letter sequence matches the source phrase. The technique scales to phrase-length anagrams of thousands of candidates.
Anagrams in word games
In Scrabble, recognising anagrams of your tile rack is essential — the letters AEILRST can form REALIST, RETAILS, SALTIER, and TAILERS, each playable in different board positions. Wordle benefits too: knowing which letters can be rearranged helps you deduce target words from limited green/yellow feedback without wasting guesses.
Letter frequency in English
The most common letters in English are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R, and D — in roughly that order. Vowels make up about 38% of typical English text. If your letters include E and T, you have two of the most versatile letters in the language, increasing the number of valid words available. Q and Z are the rarest and hardest to use.
Related calculations
To reformat text rather than rearrange it, the case converter switches between upper, lower, camelCase and snake_case. For a single jumbled word, the word unscrambler is more direct.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an anagram solver and a word descrambler?
An anagram solver only shows words or phrases that use every single letter exactly once — for example, LISTEN → SILENT, ENLIST, TINSEL. A word descrambler finds every word that can be made from any subset of your letters, which is more useful for managing a Scrabble rack.
What can I use the anagram solver for?

Enter a ? to represent an unknown or blank tile — the solver substitutes every letter of the alphabet and shows all valid words reachable for each substitution. This is especially useful for Scrabble or when you have a wildcard tile.
