How to Read a World Time Zone Map
What the map shows
Each card represents a UTC offset band. The large time display shows the current local time for that offset, and the day/night indicator shows whether that zone is in daytime or night hours right now. The top strip shows all 24 UTC hours with the current UTC hour highlighted. For a live list of city clocks with search, try the world clock.
Filtering zones
Use the Day, Dawn/Dusk, and Night filter buttons to show only zones in the selected lighting period. This makes it easy to find which time zones are currently in business hours when scheduling across continents. For meeting planning across specific cities, try the timezone converter.
Half-hour and quarter-hour offsets
Some countries use non-standard offsets: India (UTC+5:30), Sri Lanka (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), Iran (UTC+3:30), and Australia's Northern Territory (UTC+9:30) among others. These are included as separate cards on the map.
Real-time updates
All times update every second directly in your browser. No data is sent to a server. The IANA timezone database is used for all offset calculations, ensuring accuracy including DST transitions for each region.
Worked example
At 14:00 UTC on a weekday: UTC+0 card shows 14:00 (Day — green); UTC+5:30 (India) shows 19:30 (Day); UTC−5 (New York) shows 09:00 (Day); UTC+9 (Japan) shows 23:00 (Night — dark card); UTC+12 (New Zealand) shows 02:00 (Night). Only UTC−4 through roughly UTC+8 are in core business hours — the Day filter makes this instantly visible.

How many time zones are there?
There are 24 standard time zones based on hourly UTC offsets, but in practice there are over 38 distinct UTC offsets in use because some countries use half-hour or quarter-hour offsets, such as India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), and Iran (UTC+3:30).
Which countries span the most time zones?
Russia spans 11 time zones (UTC+2 to UTC+12), making it the country with the most. The United States and Canada each span 6 time zones. France spans 12 when including overseas territories. China officially uses a single time zone (UTC+8) despite its geographic breadth.
What is the International Date Line?
The International Date Line (IDL) runs roughly along the 180° meridian in the Pacific Ocean. Crossing it from west to east subtracts a day; crossing from east to west adds a day. The line zigzags around national boundaries so countries are not split between two calendar dates.
Do all countries observe daylight saving time?
No. Countries including China, Japan, India, Russia, and most of Africa do not observe DST and maintain a constant UTC offset year-round. In regions that do observe DST, clocks typically move forward one hour in spring and back one hour in autumn.
