Assumptions

  • Offsets are resolved for the selected date, so daylight saving is applied as it will be on that day.
  • Some regions change their clocks on different dates, so a gap between two cities can differ by an hour for a few weeks each year.
  • Times come from your browser’s time zone database and follow the current IANA rules.
  • On this date, daylight saving is in effect in London, New York.

Time zone facts

Why is the gap between two cities not always the same?
Countries change their clocks on different dates. The UK and the United States are five hours apart for most of the year but four for a few weeks each spring.
What does UTC offset mean?
How far a place is from Coordinated Universal Time. London is UTC+0 in winter and UTC+1 on British Summer Time.
Why does a city show a different date?
Because the offset pushes the local time past midnight. Tokyo can be on tomorrow morning while London is still on this evening.
Does this account for daylight saving?
Yes. Offsets are resolved for the date you choose, so the answer reflects the rules in force on that specific day.

How Time Zones and UTC Offsets Work

UTC & Offsets

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the world's primary time standard. All other time zones are expressed as offsets — for example UTC+5:30 for India, or UTC-5 for US Eastern Standard Time.

Offsets can be in whole hours, 30-minute increments (India, Iran, Afghanistan), or even 45-minute increments (Nepal, Chatham Islands).

Daylight Saving Time

Many countries advance their clocks by one hour in summer to make better use of daylight. This means a city's UTC offset changes twice a year. The DST badge indicates when a city is currently observing daylight saving time.

Not all countries observe DST — including China, Japan, India, and most of Africa. For DST clock-change dates by country, see the daylight saving time page.

Finding Meeting Times

Use the meeting planner grid to find overlapping business hours across cities. Green slots are ideal (9am–5pm local time). Yellow slots are acceptable early morning or evening windows. Grey slots should be avoided.

Drag the time slider or click a city's time to step through the day and see all cities update simultaneously. To see all UTC offsets mapped visually, try the timezone map.

Date Line Crossings

When it's evening in New York, it's already the next day in Tokyo. The "Tomorrow" and "Yesterday" badges on each city card warn when the converted date falls on a different calendar day than your reference time.

This matters for scheduling — a 9pm Friday meeting in London is a Saturday morning in Auckland. For a live view of all time zones, try the world clock.

Worked example

Monday 10:00 AM New York (EDT, UTC−4): London = 15:00 BST, Berlin = 16:00 CEST, Dubai = 18:00 GST, Tokyo = 23:00 JST, Sydney = Tuesday 00:00 AEST. The date-crossing badge on Sydney warns that the meeting falls on a different calendar day there — a common pitfall when booking international calls from the Americas to Asia-Pacific.

Related calculations

To watch several places at once rather than convert between two, use the world clock. Offsets shift when the clocks change — daylight saving time lists the transition dates, and the sunrise and sunset calculator shows the daylight hours that result.

Evidence & Methodology

How This Page Is Grounded

Method

Represents the selected instant in UTC and formats it in each chosen IANA time zone using the browser's internationalisation data.

Important limitation: Time-zone rules change by government decision; results depend on the time-zone data shipped with the user's browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is UTC and how are time zone offsets expressed?

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the world's primary time standard, and all time zones are expressed as offsets from it — for example, UTC+5:30 for India or UTC−5 for US Eastern Standard Time. Some offsets come in 30- or 45-minute increments, such as Nepal at UTC+5:45.

How does daylight saving time affect the timezone converter?

Many countries advance their clocks by one hour in summer, meaning a city's UTC offset changes twice a year. The timezone converter shows a DST badge when a city is currently observing daylight saving time and updates all displayed times accordingly.

How do I find a good meeting time across multiple time zones?

Use the meeting planner grid — green slots are ideal (9am–5pm local time) and yellow slots indicate acceptable early morning or evening windows. Drag the time slider to step through the day and see all cities update simultaneously.
