How Many Steps Have I Walked or Run?

You may have returned from a walk or run and calculated that you've travelled a set number of miles. What you may now be wondering is how many steps you've walked or run for that number of miles.

The average human takes around 2,250 steps to walk a mile, reaching the mile mark in about 20 minutes.

What affects your step count?

Calculating an accurate figure for the number of steps you take to walk or run a mile requires you to take into account a number of different factors, including your gender, height, weight and walking/running pace. As a very crude example, a person of short stature will take more steps in walking a mile than a 7 ft tall giant.

Research behind this calculator

Our calculator, and the chart above, reference data from a 2008 research study of one-mile step counts at walking and running speeds, published in the American College of Sports Medicine's Health & Fitness Journal. The study concentrated on the number of steps people took at varying speeds of walking and running. All participants were regarded as being of 'normal weight'.

How many steps is 2 miles?

Two miles of walking at a speed of around 3 mph equates to around 4,500 steps. Your step length should be taken into consideration for an accurate conversion. A woman of average height (5 ft 3 in) walking 2 miles at a regular walking speed of 3 mph will take about 4,650 steps, whilst a man of average height (5 ft 9 in) will take about 4,420 steps. When running, your step and stride length will lengthen, meaning you take fewer steps for the distance involved.

How many steps is 3 miles?

Three miles of walking at a speed of around 3 mph equates to around 6,750 steps. A woman of average height (5 ft 3 in) will take about 6,975 steps, whilst a man of average height (5 ft 9 in) will take about 6,630 steps over the same distance.

How many steps is 4 miles?

Four miles of walking at a speed of around 3 mph equates to around 9,000 steps. Step lengths vary based upon gender, height, weight and walking speed. A woman of average height will take about 9,300 steps, whilst a man of average height will take about 8,840 steps.

How many steps is 5 miles?

Five miles of walking at a speed of around 3 mph equates to around 11,260 steps. As step lengths vary with gender, height, weight and walking speed, your step length should be factored in to get an accurate conversion. A woman of average height will take about 11,625 steps, whilst a man of average height will take about 11,050 steps.

Worked example

Female, 5 ft 5 in (165 cm), average walking pace (3 mph). Estimated stride length ≈ 66 cm. To walk 5 miles (8.05 km): steps = 8,050 m ÷ 0.66 m = approx 12,200 steps. Conversely, 10,000 steps at this stride length = 10,000 × 0.66 m = 6,600 m = 6.6 km (4.1 miles).

The 10,000 steps a day goal

The widely cited target of 10,000 steps per day equates to roughly 4.3–4.7 miles (6.9–7.6 km) for most adults, depending on height and pace. At a moderate walking pace of 3 mph, reaching 10,000 steps typically takes around 80–90 minutes and burns approximately 300–500 calories depending on body weight.

Step length and stride length

A step is the distance covered from where one foot strikes the ground to where the other foot next strikes. A stride is the distance from one footfall to the next footfall of the same foot — two steps make one stride. Stride length increases naturally with speed: runners take notably fewer steps per mile than walkers because each stride covers more ground, even though they are moving faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many steps are in a mile?

The average person takes approximately 2,000–2,500 steps to walk one mile, depending on height, gender, and pace. A woman of average height (5 ft 3 in) typically takes about 2,325 steps per mile at 3 mph; a man of average height (5 ft 9 in) about 2,215 steps. Running requires fewer steps per mile due to longer strides.

How far is 10,000 steps in miles?

10,000 steps equates to roughly 4.3–4.7 miles (6.9–7.6 km) for most adults, depending on height and pace. At 3 mph, reaching 10,000 steps takes around 80–90 minutes and burns approximately 300–500 calories depending on body weight. For a calorie estimate that accounts for your individual weight and metabolism, try the BMR calculator.

Does height affect step count?

Yes. Taller people have longer legs and a longer natural stride, so they take fewer steps to cover the same distance. Shorter people take more steps. The calculator accounts for both height and gender to give a more personalised steps-to-distance estimate. To convert your step distance into a running or walking pace, try the pace calculator.

What is the difference between a step and a stride?

A step is from one footfall to the next footfall of the opposite foot. A stride covers two steps — from one footfall to the next footfall of the same foot. Pedometers and fitness trackers count steps; some running calculators use stride length (half the stride) to calculate distance.

Evidence & Methodology

How This Page Is Grounded

Method

Uses published steps-per-mile relationships adjusted for height, gender and walking or running pace, then converts distance and steps in either direction.

Important limitation: Stride length varies by person, terrain and speed; a measured personal step length will be more accurate.
