BMR vs TDEE: What's the Difference and Why It Matters
BMR tells you how many calories you burn at rest. TDEE tells you how many you actually need each day. Here is what both mean, how they are calculated, and how to use them.
What Each Measures
Calories burned at complete rest — lying still, fasted, in a thermoneutral room. Covers basic organ function: heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, brain, and cell repair.
BMR makes up 60–70% of total daily calorie burn for most people. It is the floor below which calorie intake should never fall for extended periods.
BMR multiplied by an activity factor to account for all daily movement and exercise. TDEE is the actual number of calories you need to maintain your current weight.
Eating below TDEE causes weight loss; above causes weight gain. It is the number to use when setting calorie targets.
TDEE = BMR × Activity Factor. BMR never changes during the day; TDEE changes whenever your activity level changes.
Worked Example
BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor): (10 × 75) + (6.25 × 178) − (5 × 30) + 5 = 750 + 1,112.5 − 150 + 5 = 1,717.5 kcal/day
This is the calorie burn at rest — before any activity. TDEE at five activity levels:

Choosing 'sedentary' vs 'moderately active' is a difference of 601 kcal/day — equivalent to a full meal. This is the most common source of error when setting calorie targets.

Why BMR Alone Is Not Enough
BMR answers: "How many calories do I need to survive doing nothing?" TDEE answers: "How many calories do I actually need today?"
Three reasons TDEE matters more than BMR for practical use:
- Lifestyle accounts for 20–40% of total burn. The most sedentary person still needs ~1.2× their BMR; an active person needs 1.7–1.9×. Using BMR as a calorie target would put most people in a large, unsustainable deficit.
- The activity multiplier is where people make the most errors. Choosing "moderately active" when you are actually sedentary will add 600+ kcal/day to your target — enough to cause 0.5 kg/week of unintended weight gain.
- TDEE adjusts as your weight changes. As you lose weight, both BMR and TDEE fall. This is why fat loss plateaus — the deficit that worked at 90 kg no longer exists at 82 kg. Recalculate TDEE every 4–6 weeks.
Metabolic Adaptation: When TDEE Becomes Unpredictable
Sustained calorie restriction triggers metabolic adaptation — the body reduces non-essential energy output (fidgeting, digestion efficiency, body temperature) beyond what weight loss alone would predict. Studies suggest adaptation can reduce TDEE by 5–15% below the calculated value after several months of dieting.

The bigger source of error is the activity multiplier — most people overestimate their activity level, inflating TDEE. Treat your calculated TDEE as a starting estimate: track your weight for 2–3 weeks, then adjust by 100–200 kcal in the appropriate direction based on the result.
Does BMR change over time?
Yes. BMR falls as you lose weight (less mass to maintain) and declines gradually with age as lean muscle mass decreases — roughly 1–2% per decade after age 30. It rises if you gain significant muscle mass. Prolonged calorie restriction can also reduce BMR through metabolic adaptation. This is why recalculating every 4–6 weeks during a weight loss phase is important.
